Finding People with Growth Mindset

In 2023, I attended a series of workshops that transformed my life for the better. Over five months, I connected with inspiring people who quickly became close friends. These workshops shifted my perspective and introduced me to powerful tools—like urgency and responsibility management strategies—that I hadn’t explored before, even though I’d already been working on myself. With my new friends cheering me on, my growth took off in ways I never expected.

Those experiences made me think of the saying, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” With new tools and the chance to meet fresh faces, I found it easier than ever to choose the kind of individuals I wanted in my circle. Like most people, I gravitate toward those who support my vision and goals, who share a similar vibe and energy. It’s not that the environment magically acts for you, but it’s far easier to make positive changes when your surroundings lift you up instead of holding you back.

With my recent move to New York, I’m facing the challenge of adapting my habits to a new environment. I need to find like-minded individuals who resonate with me and create momentum toward my self-set goals. With this move, I saw a chance to rebuild my circle. A couple of days ago, I stepped into my first Toastmasters meeting, greeted by warm smiles and the hum of confident voices. I must say, it felt like I’d finally found the kind of space I need right now. Back in Santo Domingo, I’d searched for a Toastmasters group but never felt motivated to join. Now, I’m thrilled to challenge myself—improving my English-speaking skills, sharpening my public speaking, and growing as a leader—while meeting supportive people with a growth mindset.

I do miss a few groups from the Dominican Republic, like the running club and the business development group, where I felt truly at home. The sense of community grows stronger when everyone’s activities and goals align—especially in running, where shared victories feel electric. I’ve learned that growth is richer when shared. As I settle into New York, I’m eager to find new communities—like a running club or business group—where I can keep leveling up with inspiring people. After all, the right circle doesn’t just shape our goals; it makes the journey unforgettable.
