The Human Element in the Age of AI

It’s amazing to live in this era; it’s easy to get dizzy with all the changes in the way of work that we are experimenting with. The avalanche of information is so much that it is hard to stay ahead in just one knowledge field, and even harder if we try to expand to others.

When I started my studies at university, a friend of my family told me that if I want to learn something that will not change in time, I should choose accounting, because it’s a subject that has small changes over time. The time has proved it wrong. Even for a career that I thought was stable and with a clear market, the global events made changes that required constant actualization from every professional. Regulations has required that every accountant get updated, new standards, new financial instruments, new tools, and so on.

Other fields of knowledge are experimenting with changes that in just one year let you out of the loop, and you need to retrain yourself to at least understand part of the changes. The best example of that is AI.

What is happening now is clearly a revolution of how we think. The impact of changes is like previous revolutions. Like agriculture that allows us to stay in one place, or the industrial revolution to the creation of cities, the car for convenient transportation, the internet for communication, and now the artificial intelligence for the way of thinking.

AI is a tool for thinking as a car is for transportation. We can move from a city to another walking, but it is faster using a car; the same happened with many mental processes that can have a substantial improvement with the assistance of the proper tool. The best example of that is programming.

In the center of every revolution, we can find the human creating the tools that make our lives better. Skills matter more than equipment, and the use of equipment is dictated by us. The tool is not a problem. The problem is the use that we can make of it.

As we embrace the age of AI, we must remember that it is our creativity, empathy, and wisdom that will guide us. By leveraging AI as a tool for thinking, we can unlock new possibilities and create a future where technology enhances our humanity. Let us move forward with optimism and confidence, knowing that the human element will always be at the heart of progress.
